Probal Ray Chowdhury
Probal Roy Chowdhury is an independent researcher with keen interest in the study of Indian history, culture and civilization. His doctoral work has been in continuation of the perspective presented by the late Gandhian thinker and historian Dharampal (1922 – 2006) in his seminal work, “The Beautiful Tree”, which showed the flourishing state of indigenous education in Madras Presidency during 1820-25. In his Ph.D. thesis, “Changing Profile of Community Participation in School Education in Madras Presidency: 1820-1920”, Probal traced the history of indigenous education in Madras Presidency and its transformation under the British rule in the nineteenth century. Probal currently is engaged in scholarly explorations on the history of indigenous education in the Bengal presidency region and on cultural and ritual traditions of Bengal, especially Durga Puja.
